Let’s talk professional headshots. What is it? What is it used for? Why do I need one?
According to wikipedia, A head shot or headshot is a modern (mostly digital files ) portrait where the focus is on the person. The term is usually applied for professional profile images on social media, the ‘about us page’ or a corporate website and promotional pictures of actors, models, and authors.
While wikipedia and most google searches all state that a head shot is a professional image of the person being featured, don’t get caught up on that word “professional”. You see, having a professional head shot is important, but let’s not think of professional meaning boring backgrounds and stiff poses. In this context, professional means being captured by a professional photographer for a quality high resolution final product.
In today’s society, women in business are being more and more personable as the consumer wants to see “who” they are working with versus “what” they’re consuming. Having a personable, but professional head shot is imperative. This is especially true for female entrepreneurs. Consumers, whether purchasing a product or service from a small business want to know who they are supporting. While it should essentially be about the quality of your product or service, consumers are more invested in the “who” versus the “what”. Think about it, how many times have you visited a small business website and the first page you click is the “about” page? Do you visit walmart.com looking for the “about” page? Does it even matter who owns or operates larger corporations when you are purchasing goods or services? In most cases, you’ll find yourself saying no.
On February 7, 2019 a day before the launch of The Belle Society website, I asked my instagram followers to help me select a new professional head shot. Having lost over 125 pounds, my current head shot was no longer an accurate visual representation of my image. Unknowingly, my supporters were actually helping me to support my theory above for this post. With over 600 hundred votes, it was interesting to see how each person perceived the optional images. Some just picked the one they liked the most, while others took more time to express why the image they selected was best.

Getting my instagram family involved with selecting my 2019 head shot was imperative as I value their opinions. Knowing the type of platform I’d be using the image for, it was important that I chose the image that best represented my personality. So all of the options I presented were a true depiction of who I am both personally and professionally. As the founder of The Belle Society, a community where I want women to be themselves and live an empowered life, my head shot needed to represent freedom, strength, and joy! With the help of my amazing supporters, the below image got the most love and will be one of my primary head shots of 2019!!

Here are a few tips that will help you create the best head shot for your brand or business.
- Hire a Professional Photographer
- Depending on your profession, select wardrobe items that best represent your brand (be sure to keep it classy, but sassy if it can apply)
- Chose clothing that is on target with your brand colors
- Chose locations that will provide the right visuals for your website, print marketing, and future projects (white studio backdrops and outdoor scenes are usually spot on)
- Show your personality
- Update head shots yearly
If you haven’t started working on your 2019 head shots, start planning now. A professional head shot can be the difference between getting the job and getting passed on because the consumer couldn’t “see” who they’d be supporting.
Cheers to 2019!! #bossbelle
